Position:  Reporting to the Chief Innovation Officer, the Human Factors Engineer will participate in the creation of innovative product solutions and human interfaces by utilizing best practices of Human Factors Engineering while working closely with development teams.

Nature of Role:  The Human Factors Engineer will lead human factors engineering design, development, and testing activities in cross-functional program teams innovating and improving medical device and consumer healthcare products.  The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of the theories, principles, and data associated with human performance capabilities and limitations (perceptual, cognitive, motor, biomechanical, and anthropometric) and the ability to apply this knowledge to the design, definition, evaluation, launch, and use of consumer healthcare products and medical devices.

Requirements:  Detail-oriented, energetic self-starter with strong communication and organizational skills.  The successful candidate will have a proven ability to multi-task and work collaboratively as well as independently in a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment.  The position requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in a human factors engineering role coupled with medical device industry experience.  Additional qualifications are as follows:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Psychology, or related discipline/specialty in Human Factors

• Prior experience with statistical and computational methods

• Working understanding of the principles of Medical Device and healthcare regulations including  FDA’s Quality System Regulation (QSR) , ISO 13485:2003, etc.

• Thorough understanding of design requirements for design, development, validation, and verification of medical devices

• Proven experience in the development of HFE principles of ergonomics, human computer/machine interface, and data collection/analysis methodologies

• Competence with human modeling tools, statistical analysis, and 3D modeling tools

Responsibilities:

• Apply HFE knowledge in a cross-functional team environment to evaluate the design space for new consumer healthcare products and medical devices

• Provide human factors support across the product lifecycle including client and user needs identification, development of user and workplace profiles and usage scenarios, task analysis, requirements specification, generation of hardware and software design concepts (creation of physical models and prototypes, graphical user interfaces, and product graphics), user interface design, usability testing, user error analysis, and post-launch outcomes analysis

• Conceptualize and execute human factors engineering direction in accordance with client and development team goals – producing customer focused designs that address user needs, platforms, architecture, and manufacturing constraints

• Develop physical and interaction design solutions to complex, system-wide usability problems that require ingenuity and creativity

• Perform human factors engineering functions for computer human interface analysis, situational awareness, human-in-the-loop scenarios, ergonomics, and kinematics

• Perform anthropometric, biomechanical, ergonomic, and systems safety analyses to product development programs and proposals

• Cross-examine and optimize developmental prototypes and provide ergonomic, usability and safety assessments for consumer healthcare products and medical devices

• Plan and conduct end user evaluations of product concepts, data analysis, document evaluation methods/results and present design recommendations to the project team

• Develop and conduct human factors research studies independently or in conjunction with clients and/or government agencies (FDA, etc.)
