Discussion
n Increase in calf circumference occurs with most
sedentary positions (Pottier, Dubreuil & Mondod, 1969;
Noddeland & Winkel, 1988).
n An increase in calf circumference without an increase in
ankle circumference cannot be considered edema.
n A higher SST signifies greater cutaneous blood flow.
n Decrease in SST is expected when the room
temperature is lower than SST (8C; Winkel &
Jorgenson, 1986).
n Voluntary, but subconscious, movement may be caused
by a decline in blood flow (Smith & Kampine, 1990).
n Active muscles require greater blood flow (Skinner,
1975).
